How the AHRC Responds to Tragic Human Rights Events

Writer's picture: AHRCAHRC

Dear Arlington friends and neighbors,

In the past, when the AHRC has heard from community members that tragic human rights events - both at home and abroad - have affected them here in Arlington, we have released statements intended to call attention to shared human rights concerns and express support for our neighbors who were impacted by these events.

In October, 2023, after hearing that our statement on the violence in Israel and Gaza was too slow to respond and hurt some members of our community, we re-evaluated our approach and sought a wider range of activities we could take when tragic human rights events occur.

We formed a small team to work on this issue in our November 15 meeting. We discussed their initial thinking in our December 20 meeting, and we voted to approve a revised policy in our meeting on January 17, 2024. This policy is scheduled to be re-evaluated in one year.

Arlington values equity, diversity, and inclusion. We are committed to building a community where everyone is heard, respected, and protected.
